Early Christian Writings: Need to Read or No?

There are a lot of early church writings, written by some really good men (Ignatius, Clement, Augustine, etc.). And it goes without saying that their writings are important and influential (Ex: Augustine huge influence upon Luther). But must we read them and by them gain special insight into Christian doctrine?
